Teaching Philosophy:

As both an artist and an art educator, I believe in the potential a creative education has in enriching a student’s life. An art teacher should act as a facilitator of knowledge who provides students with the practical, social, and critical thinking skills needed to develop an exploratory understanding of who they are, what they value, and where their interests lie.

An art education curriculum should be diverse in material, multicultural in content, and emphasize student choice with regards to their interests. I want to create in my students high expectations for themselves by stimulating the integral development of their personal process, rather than their outcomes. Education should be characterized by its ability to expand the minds of young people, not confine them.

With the idea of a holistic approach in mind, I would like to be an art educator who enables my students to connect with art in a way that encourages them to be forward thinking, progressive innovators, wholly in tune with the systems that operate around them. I believe that by using collaborative and immersive strategies focused on engaging the senses, I can cultivate an authentic, eager artistic curiosity within my students.

Creating an art classroom where interactive investigations are transpiring will lead students to both questions and answers that help to define their sense of self and way of seeing. In this way, I hope to foster confident, self-regulated individuals who are roused to be lifelong, passionate learners, and active, productive members of society.
